Drupalcon 2010

Recap of the biggest Drupal event of the year

DrupalCon San Francisco featured three full days of sessions from the best and brightest in the Drupal community and Silicon Valley luminaries. There was also a Core Developer Summit, a Drupal Sprint and BOF Day, and professional Drupal training sessions the weekend before. The traditional Code Sprint happened the day after the conference.

San Francisco was a world-class city full of wonderful cuisine and culture. As home to Silicon Valley, it is one of the most technologically vibrant areas in the world.

Having been to Drupalcons in the past, Web Easy Media knew what to expect - the who's who of the Drupal community and constant networking opportunities and after-parties. If the conference itself wasn't enough to make your head spin, the constant Drupal-talk taking place afterwards certainly will.

While it was impossible to attend every session, BOF, sprint or party (although we tried), there were several hi-level themes that everyone was talking about.

1. Drupal is growing up, and so are we.

Drupal's evolution has brought it to the cusp of a tipping point.  There will soon be a giant momentum swing that will carry everyone on this ship higher.

Growth is what we've been working so hard to achieve, but growth can be painful as well. The pains that we have experienced at WebEasyMedia.com are the same pains that the entire community is facing.

Uncle Ben said "With great power, comes great responsibility".  We're only at the beginning of learning how to harness our power.

2. Drupal 7's imminent release is going to be explosive.

We have the best open source content management tool every created at our fingertips, with Drupal 6.  Drupal 7 will be released very soon.  We're already in an Alpha 3 release, and the end of the development cycle is in sight.

With brand new features like a new database abstraction layer, fieldable entities, more UI/UX focus, and powerful contributed modules from D6 moved into the core of D7, D7 is a game changer.

If nothing I said in the previous paragraph makes sense to you, don't worry.  It simply means... you ain't seen nothing yet.

3. The community behind Drupal IS Drupal.

Any open source project worth it's salt has a good community behind it.  Drupal is different because it has a great, no the greatest community behind it.

Everyone from the most successful companies in the field to the hobbiest who just installed their first Drupal blog yesterday is considered a valuable part of the community.

All contibutors are welcome, and assistance is offered every where you turn.  The openness and giving spirit of everyone who is active in this community is the core reason Drupal is great.

WebEasyMedia is dedicated to participating in that community at it's highest levels, and bringing the power of Drupal to anyone in Indianapolis willing to build a better online experience.  If you don't want to be left behind while the rest of the world figures out what they can do with Drupal, give us a call, drop us an email, or come by and meet us.

We can't wait to share what we've got with you Indy.
