Intern Perspective
Its hard being green
A few months ago, I became an intern at Web Easy Media. With graduation approaching, I felt this would be a good opportunity to update my technical skills. IUPUI is a great school, but when textbooks that cost a mortgage payment refer to dot-com era as "up and coming", it’s a little discouraging.
In my first few weeks at Web Easy Media, I learned the basics about web development. Apparently I am as green as they come; I'm 26 and can barely figure out facebook. The company uses an open source content management system (CMS) called Drupal.
An open source CMS means the community of Drupal users can contribute and learn from one another. Drupal is continuously being monitored and updated, allowing for a fresh and safe environment for those who use it in any function of web development.
My first impression of Drupal was not very good. As a business major, I have been taught that nothing good in this life comes free, not even love. So when Drupal was explained to me, I didn't understand how it could be a powerful tool if people could give and take from it as they pleased.
My impression changed when I saw it in action. Though my 10 year old niece has more web skills than I do, I was able to quickly learn how to update content, add pictures and videos. Whereas setting up the website is still a job for the nerds sitting next to me, being able to change content on a website without having to call someone was pretty surprising.
With my internship being extended until I graduate, I have decided to start blogging about my transition from being green to becoming a professional. If you are as technically savvy as me and want to tell your own green story or make a comment, please do. It will be nice to know I'm not the only green one out there.
