Let's talk about...colon cleanser?

In case this is the first blog of mine you are reading, I am “green”, meaning I’m new to the detailed world of website development. Often, I am asked at Web Easy Media for my input on ideas for website designs since I look at them through non-technical eyes. One of the first one’s I was asked to look at is by far the most memorable; sexy colon cleanser.

On a website I will not identify, a potential client was testing two web pages to sell the company’s colon cleanser. The first page had a very attractive, provocatively dressed woman holding the colon cleanser; the second page was much more conventional. Now I don’t know about you, but when I’m in need of a good colon cleaning, I’m not imagining anything sexy.

After the two pages were tested online, the hot girl got flushed.

Beauty sells products, this is obvious. Try as we will not to be vain, the attractive salesperson is more likely to get us to buy their product than an unattractive one.

Million of products advertise beauty and sex as a tool to draw consumers to their product, even when the product itself has no potential of getting that beauty next door to notice you. “You shop at Auto Zone...ooohhh, that’s hot!”

GoDaddy.com is a web domain registrar and hosting company. Their ads are often sexually charged, though it is not relevant to the company’s actual business. Unlike the provocative colon cleanser, GoDaddy.com has seen a higher conversion rate due to their risqué ads.

Conversion rate, according to marketingterms, is “the percentage of visitors who take a desired action”.

Gaining internet traffic to one’s website is the key to any successful marketing campaign. More important than traffic, though, is a website’s conversion rate. Increasing the hits on one's website is great, but it won’t help a company grow or even stay out of the red if consumers are not buying products or signing up for services

Luckily for me, my dashing good looks have not been exploited to draw more traffic to this site…yet. Sex sells, but it won’t always increase a company’s sales. A strong website and good customer service is often the most effective tool for increasing a site’s conversion rate. Of course I could be wrong...some people might find a clean colon hot.
