Cleaning Up Your Site

No harsh chemicals needed

Spring is finally in the air and with it comes the ever popular "spring cleaning" advertisements. With as much emphasis as companies put on this annual tradition, one would think that we all just live in our own filth throughout winter. One cleaner, whose multi-purpose formula works great in the bathroom and in the garage, displays before and after shots of bathrooms that apparently have not been cleaned for about 15 years. Whereas this product cleans up the hard water, mildew and built-up dirt stains in less than 10 minutes, the bigger issue is never answered; who lived in this place and why did they wait 15 years to clean their shower?

Often, companies are no different than households when it comes to this cleaning holiday. Instead of putting sweaters into vac storage bags, though, many companies spring clean their websites. Whereas it is always good to give your website a tune-up, waiting until the oil light comes on before taking action is asking for trouble.

At Web Easy Media, we do not believe in "Spring Cleaning". Why you might ask? A website is a portal for your company to the world and if the world is seeing outdated information, a company's authority in a market is jeopardized.

Keeping a website up-to date is not difficult if it uses Drupal as its CMS. One popular tool to keep relevant and current information on a website is called a “web feed". A web feed takes content from a syndicated distributor, for example the Associated Press, and links it to your website. Whenever new content is made available from the distributor, it automatically updates your website with the new information. By choosing the appropriate sources in which to link web feeds, a company can have current information displayed on their site without having to lift a finger.

Another useful tool to use for keeping a site fresh is the blog/article module. By having consistent blogs or articles pertaining to your company or industry written in-house and displayed on one's site, a company gains authority, increasing search engine optimization. It also gives a website the personal touch so often lost in the digital age.

So as you prepare to clean out the garage you can no longer fit your car into, keep in mind the importance of an updated website. Drupal makes it easy to change content or add the tools to keep your site smelling like clean laundry. As for me, I'm about to strap on some gloves and prepare for the annual "toilet cleaning rite of passage" as the intern at Web Easy Media.

Ahhh, you gotta love spring.
