Refresh Indy

Refreshing your mindset

On the first Wednesday of every month, at 7 pm, the Rock Bottom restaurant in downtown Indianapolis is the spot for some of the best web professional minds in Indy to eat and drink. For two hours, over twenty professionals, whose combined skills cover every aspect of web development and design, discussed the latest trends concerning the web and technology. This group was brought together by Refresh Indy. As the group’s numbers continue to grow, so does it’s combined knowledge and influence.

Started by Justin Harter in 2009, Refresh Indy gives local web designers and developers an opportunity to meet, network and learn from one another and, in turn, improve Indianapolis’s web community. For the past two months, I have attended Refresh Indy’s monthly events. As a marketing major whose web development and design skills are by no means advanced, I was initially hesitant to attend. To my surprise, though, the event showcases both the impressive talent and personality of the Indianapolis web community. No question asked is mocked, no idea is immediately dismissed; everyone has a place and a voice.

Besides meeting up monthly for food, drinks and discussion, Refresh Indy gives back to the community. Last month, the group did a 48 hour “web-a-thon”, in which the group created three websites for local charitable groups within the 48 hour event.

As the web and technology continue to change and grow, bringing some of the best minds into one area is a great learning and networking atmosphere.
